EXCAVATIONS AT HELGÖ XIV. Cemetery 118 and Building Group 7 and Cemetery 115 Författare MELIN, JULIE & SIGVALLIUS, BERIT This volume is devoted to Cemetery 118, the excavated remains of building Group 7 that underlay it, and a single grave from Cemetery 115 which was investigated under rescue conditions. Two-thirds of the burials on Cemetery 118 were excavated in 1976-1978; the remainder were left uninvestigated when the Helgö Project was closed down in autumn 1978. Julie Melin has here collated the excavation records to present all the available information about the cemetery and the settlement remains, and the single grave from Cemetery 115. Berit Sigvallius has done all the osteological work on the cemeteries and settlement, and in addition presents a comparison of the osteology from all previously published cemeteries on Helgö. |

POPULAR PRINTS AND IMAGERY. Proceedings of an International Conference in Lund 2000 Redaktörer BRINGÉUS, NILS-ARVID & STEN-ÅKE NILSSON, ISBN 91-7402-318-7 The study of popular prints and imagery has seen increased development in Europe since the 1960s, especially in Germany and Scandinavia. A first attempt to bring together European scholars around the theme of massdistributed pictures was held by Société Internationale d'Ethnologie et de Folklore (SIEF) in Lund, Sweden in 1984. In October 2000 the sixth conference, focusing on Popular Prints and Imagery was organized. In this volume 22 ethnologists and art historians from 11 different countries publish their contributions. The richly illustrated volume contains studies of pictures from the sixteenth century until today from Italy to Norway, from Holland to Russia. Some papers sketch the historical background, others give national examples of different kinds of production. Many others deal with motif studies and iconographical aspects. Together the papers, written in English and German, cover a broad field of research. |

THE QUEEN LOVISA ULRIKA COLLECTION OF NUMISMATIC LITERATURE Författare STRANDBERG, CLAS-OVE The complete catalogue of the Queen Lovisa Ulrika Collection of Numismatic Literature in the Library of the Royal Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities, Stockholm, is printed with bibliographic information, including descriptions of the bindings, and notes on the authors. Photograhic illustrations of the title pages accompany the bibliographic descriptions. The major part of the collection was brought together by Count Carl Gustaf Tessin in the early part of the eighteenth century and sold by him to Queen Lovisa Ulrika in the 1750s. Upon the death of the Queen's son, Gustav III, the books were moved to the Royal Museum in which the collections of coins and medals were kept, later to be transferred to the Academy Library. The collection is now housed in the Royal Coin Cabinet. |

HISTORY OF FOOTWEAR IN NORWAY, SWEDEN AND FINLAND Författare SWANN, JUNE This lavishly illustrated book studies how shoe constructions, patterns and styles evolved in the three Scandinavian countries. Individual shoes and styles are analysed to show similarities with Europe, both east and west, and the differences of time, with the occasional creation of the unique, or rejection of popular European fashions. It shows the patterns for Sami footwear, many unique, and those features of so-called folk dress which have evolved from fashion and those that are original to the region. It reflects the importance of the Age of Greatness in seventeenth-century Sweden and the region in earlier Viking times, as well as the transient power of important cities. The bibliographies for the three countries and for Sami footwear are intended as a basis for others to build on. |

Retorik brukar vanligen översättas med talarkonst, men begreppet är betydligt vidare än så. Under antiken innebar ordet "konsten att övertyga", och man avsåg då övertygandets konst både i det språkliga uttryckssättet, ordvalet och framförandet. Utifrån från denna definition kan man tycka att retoriken är helt oförenlig med vetenskapen och dess krav på exakthet. Redan under antiken insåg man dock hur nära varandra de två egentligen står. Även inom vetenskapen behöver man språket för att analysera, förklara, övertyga - och detta är en del av retoriken. Under de senaste decennierna har intresset för retorik vuxit sig allt starkare och man har nu på nytt tagit upp frågan om det finns ett retoriskt element i alla vetenskaper. Vetenskap och retorik är den första bok på svenska som behandlar detta problem. Den presenterar metoder och modeller som kan användas inom forskning och undervisning och vänder sig till forskare och studerande inom t.ex. historia, litteraturvetenskap, teologi, filosofi, retorik, konst- och idéhistoria. Boken innehåller 13 uppsatser som undersöker retorikens roll i moderna vetenskapliga sammanhang. Uppsatserna har samlats i tre avdelningar: filosofi och vetenskapsteori, teologi och det religiösa språket, de humanistiska vetenskaperna. HANS FORSSELL – Historiker, publicist, statsråd Författare SCHÜCK, HERMAN
Hans Forssell var under 1870- och 80-talen en högt uppburen forskare, ämbetsman och politiker. Han disputerade i Uppsala 1866 på en banbrytande avhandling om Gustav Vasa. Åren därefter är han intensivt arbetande och uppmärksammad: som tidningsredaktör, som sekreterare i utskott och utredningar, som idé- och samhällsdebattör och historiker. Han blev beundrad för sin arbetskapacitet och idérikedom, men ansågs också vara äregirig, utmanande och splittrad. År 1875 vid 32 års ålder blev han finansminister i De Geers andra ministär. Som statsråd var han en särling med lysande utförsgåvor men med föga gehör hos rikets herrar. Efter en schism med statsministern Arvid Posse tvingades han avgå 1880. Hans Forssell blev nu president i Kammarkollegiet och fortsatte som forskare och samhällsdebattör. År 1881 invaldes han i Svenska Akademien. Hans stora forskningsprojekt om vasatiden kom dock att reduceras till arbeten av mer statistisk art. Med sina politiska åsikter hamnade han också allt mer på tvärs mot samhällsutvecklingen och som debattör blev han mer och mer marginaliserad. Hans forskning har uppmärksammats först nu hundra år efter hans död. Hans Forssells (1843–1901) bana började lysande, men med åren hamnade han allt mer i otakt med sin egen tid. I Hjalmar Söderbergs skådespel ”Gertrud” förekommer han under namnet Tor Torell om vilken det där sägs att han var ”ett namn som det var klang i en gång i världen”. |

SANCTA BIRGITTA REVELACIONES BOOK II Redaktörer UNDHAGEN, C-G & BERGH, B. The present volume contains the first critical edition of the Latin text of St. Birgitta’s (1303-73) Revelations, Book II. The edition is based on a collation of eleven selected MSS. which, in the edition of other Revelations books, have proved to be of high quality. In one of the introductory chapters, the relationships between these MSS. are accounted for. The archetype of the MSS., reconstructed as described in the chapter on principles of edition, is analysed in detail in a chapter on textual criticism. It appears to contain numerous errors, which are corrected in the edition. A glossary lists all such words as are either missing in George’ Handwörterbuch or appear there with a meaning not applicable in the text of the present edition. Indices of different kinds conclude the edition. |
