Properties of the Academy

In 1986 agreement was reached between the Academy and the National Heritage Board about a transfer of property from the Academy to the Crown. However, some estates received by the Academy by way of bequests from private donors are under the direct administration of the learned society itself. The Academy is required to retain possession of these bequest and they were not included in the agreement with the State.

Together with the Academy’s present headquarters, the Rettig Villa, the late Dr. Herbert Rettig and his wife Ing-Marie bequeathed to the Academy – as part of the Rettig Cultural Foundation, which also comprises a very substantial portfolio of investments – the Manor House of Skånelaholm, some 20 miles to the north of Stockholm.

In 2002 the Academy adopted a development plan for its cultural estates. Its main objectives are to maintain and develop the Academy’s tradition of safe guarding the cultural environment and to enable the estates to become an interface between the Academy and the public.
